What is a Knit Along (aka KAL)?
A Knit Along, or KAL for short, is a community event where knitters come together to work on the same project(s) at the same time. It’s a great way to connect with other knitters, share tips and tricks, get help for a new skill, and stay motivated to finish your project.

Summer of Socks runs from June 1 to midnight on July 31. This year’s Summer of Sock’s theme is Lord of the Rings, inspired by Long Dog Yarn’s One Collection! Just casting on one of the 3 sock patterns gets you an entry!

- Lothlorian – Simple lace knit sock
- Helm’s Deep – Stunning cables knit sock

How to Enter: Knit Along Prizes
So how do you win these fabulous prizes? Great question! Entries are counted from June 1 to July 31.
First, join the Summer of Socks Ravelry group! When you’ve cast on one of the Summer of Socks knitting patterns (Hobbiton, Lothlorian, or Helm’s Deep), add your project to Ravelry. This will allow you to share pictures in the prize threads to gain entries!
1 entry for each:
- Cast on! Share a picture in the Cast On thread!
- Social share! Use #summerofsocksKAL on IG to gain entries!
2 entries for each:
- Each sock that uses Long Dog Yarn! Share a picture in the Yarn Love thread!
3 entries for each:
- Finished Sock! Share a picture in the I’ve Finished thread!
One-Time Entries, shared to the Bonus Entries thread:
- 1 entry = each IG follow of Nurture Knitwear, Long Dog Yarn, and The Wren Wife
- 2 entries = joining in the Cast On Party!

This summer’s knit sock patterns come in 3 different styles, with 3 different levels of concentration so there’s something for every knitter! All 3 patterns are available now on Ravelry, but every 2 weeks throughout the knit along I will feature one of the patterns.
Before telling you all about Hobbiton, a knit sock pattern for beginners, I want to give you a sneak peek of the other 2 patterns filling out our trio.
Do you like cables? Check out the phenomenally gorgeous Helm’s Deep. This fabulous cabled knit sock is inspired by the detailed scrollwork on dwarvish axes in the Lord of the Rings world.
Maybe you drool over lace? Check out Lothlorian. This light and lacey knit sock is inspired by the light-footed elves of the woodland realm.

Hobbiton is a great knit sock pattern for beginners. This textured pattern is designed with simple knit and purl stitches and easy-to-follow instructions, making it perfect for those new to sock knitting.
