Painted Glass: A Mosaic Shawl Knitting Pattern Designed to Stun

Well folks, today it’s going to be a short article because I’m going to let the pictures speak for themselves. Painted Glass is not just a mosaic shawl knitting pattern. It’s the mosaic shawl knitting pattern.

I could tell you to prepare to be mesmerized by its stunning diamond motif, reminiscent of the intricate beauty found in stained glass windows.

But I don’t need to. Just check it out for yourself.

The Lowdown on the Mosaic Knitting Pattern

The “Painted Glass” shawl is more than just a knitting project; it’s a canvas for creativity and expression. Inspired by the kaleidoscopic allure of stained glass, this pattern brings together simplicity and elegance in a breathtaking design.

What makes this pattern truly remarkable is its deceptive simplicity. While the finished product appears as though it requires advanced skills, it’s shockingly easy to knit. Perfect for both beginner and seasoned knitters alike, the mosaic technique used in this pattern creates intricate colorwork without the hassle of complex techniques.

The Magic of Mosaic

Mosaic knitting, for the uninitiated, is a technique that involves working with one color at a time per row while slipping stitches in the alternate color to create the illusion of intricate patterns. The beauty of mosaic knitting lies in its simplicity; it’s essentially just knit and slip stitches, making it accessible to knitters of all skill levels.

In the “Painted Glass” shawl, the diamond motif comes to life through clever combinations of slipped stitches and color changes. The result? A mesmerizing interplay of hues that dance across your shawl like rays of light through stained glass.

The Edge of Elegance

But the allure of the “Painted Glass” shawl doesn’t stop with its captivating center motif. The shawl features garter stitch triangles to complete the final diamond edge. This sharp detail adds a touch of whimsy and sophistication.

That Yarn Though…

Three colors (and 4 skeins) of Spincycle Yarn’s Dyed in the Wool help bring a new dimension to the shawl, filling the “painted glass” with ever-changing colors.

And Crave Yarn’s Roam adds drape and shine to the structure of this outstanding mosaic shawl knitting pattern.

A Mosaic Knitting Pattern for the Ages

In the world of knitting, few things are as satisfying as watching a pattern come to life on your needles. (And for me this feeling was trebled as I had been dreaming and scheming up this design for almost 3 years.)

My Story with the Painted Glass Shawl Pattern Design

The story started 3 years ago at a little yarn store in Nashville. I found 4 special skeins of Spincycle Dyed in the Wool (my first time seeing it IRL) that needed to go together with a dark blue.

I then spent over 2 years sketching and dreaming and waiting to find its perfect match–which I certainly did in Crave Yarn’s Roam.

Over time, the design morphed and transformed into something I was excited about.

But I was also really scared to begin.

This was special yarn. This was a special design.

What if I couldn’t make it work the way I had envisioned it?

It was an odd feeling for me. I love my yarn and designs, but I’m not usually super precious about them and certainly not afraid.

It took me giving myself permission to fail before I finally found the confidence to begin.

But when I finally did, it turned out better than I could have imagined.
