One Color or All the Colors for Your Knit Shawl Wrap Pattern

One of the most exciting decisions when starting a knitting project is selecting the yarn. When it comes to your shawl wrap, the choice between using one color or multiple colors for both the main knit blocks and the stripes. The resulting combinations can dramatically change the final look. Here are some considerations to help you decide:

1. One Color for the Body: Opting for a single color creates a sleek and sophisticated look. This choice allows the stripes to take center stage, showcasing the juxtaposed color pops. A monochromatic wrap can be versatile and easily paired with various outfits.

2. One Color for the Stripes: Now by “one color” I went for a variegated colorway that infused a few colors into the single yarn stripes. But opting for a single solid colorway will give strength and calm to the stripes.

3. Multiple Colors for the Body: Want to use up all your sock ends? Using multiple colors can add depth, visual interest, and a playful touch to your knit shawl wrap. You can experiment with each new knit section being a unique color block to create an eye-catching accessory. Consider selecting colors that complement each other or create a bold contrast for added impact.

4. Multiple Colors for the Stripes: This is the most fun way to play with scraps. You could make every single stripe a different color. Or choose to create each section with the same colored stripes. Set against a single color body, this look would be amazing!

When choosing your yarn colors, consider your personal style, the occasion for which you’ll be wearing the shawl wrap, and your overall wardrobe palette. Trust your instincts and let your creativity guide you in making a decision that reflects your individuality.

The Fabulous Yarn for Haverhill: A Knit Wrap Shawl Pattern

I opted for a striking single-color black body for my knit wrap. I love wearing black and when I do it makes the crazy diagonal stripes almost float off me. It’s a striking effect.

For the black, I chose Black Cat Fiber’s Nomad Sock in Pure Black. It’s absolutely delicious. And I chose that black because I needed something to balance the fabulous intensity of Rainbow Road.

Something about the colorway Rainbow Road drew me again and again as I walked around the Black Cat Fibers booth. In different yarns and weights, I kept picking it up and playing with it.

Neon is not usually my color palette. But this yarn…

Well, we’ve all had that experience.

When I found it in Nimbus—a sheer cloud of brushed baby Suri goodness—I was a goner.

The entire Haverhill design was an experiment in balancing that beloved, but intense color and turning it into something I want to wear every day.

Knitting Lace on the Wrong Side: Understanding the Techniques and Stitches

One of the most captivating aspects of the knit shawl wrap pattern is the lace motif.

While contemplating what stitches to use in Haverhill, I knew I wanted to use a bit of lace, but as I began purling long rows, I had the thought “Working lace on the RS is a waste of a good knit row.” So I tried knitting lace on the WS. And I loved the results.

However, lace knitting on the wrong side of the fabric may be a smidge intimidating but it’s surprisingly easy to get used to and learn how to “read” your fabric from the WS.

Here are some key techniques and stitches to help you master knitting lace on the wrong side:

1. Purling Lace: When working on the wrong side, you’ll often encounter purl stitches in lace patterns. To create a smooth and even fabric, make sure to purl these stitches with care. Keep your tension consistent and pay attention to the pattern instructions to ensure proper placement of purl stitches.

2. Yarn Overs: Yarn overs are an essential part of lace knitting and create the decorative holes and eyelets. On the wrong side, yarn overs are created in exactly the same way as on the right side. Make sure to wrap the yarn from front to back around the needle to maintain an even tension and create balanced and well-defined eyelets.

3. Decreases: Lace patterns frequently include decreases, such as knit two together (K2tog) or slip-slip-knit (SSK), but when knitting lace on the wrong side these will be swapped for purl two together (P2tog) and slip-slip-purl (ssp). These decrease stitches help shape the lace motifs and maintain the overall structure of the fabric. Follow the pattern instructions carefully to execute these decreases correctly on the wrong side.

With practice and patience, knitting lace on the wrong side will become second nature. Embrace the challenge, and soon you’ll be creating intricate lace patterns with ease and confidence.

Tips for Customizing the Knit Shawl Wrap Pattern

While the knit shawl wrap pattern provides detailed instructions, there’s always room for customization to make it truly your own. Here are some tips for adding your personal touch to the pattern:

1. Color Selection: As we explored above, choose yarn colors that reflect your personality and match your existing wardrobe. Consider selecting a neutral color for a versatile wrap that can be paired with any outfit, or go bold with vibrant hues to make a statement.

2. Yarn Weight: Experiment with different yarn weights to achieve the desired drape and texture. Thicker yarns will create a chunkier and cozier wrap, while lighter yarns will result in a more delicate and airy feel.

3. Pattern Modifications: Once you feel comfortable with the pattern, don’t be afraid to make small modifications to suit your preferences. You can add additional lace motifs, adjust the size of the wrap (instructions included), or even incorporate different stitch patterns for a unique twist.

Remember, knitting is all about creativity and self-expression. Use the pattern as a starting point and let your imagination guide you towards creating a shawl wrap that is truly one-of-a-kind.

2. Belted Shawl: Cinch your shawl wrap at the waist with a stylish belt to create a more structured and modern look. This can be a great way to add definition to your silhouette while keeping warm.
